Personal letters in Paul’s day tended to follow certain conventions, and the letters of the New Testament are no exception. Paul himself adopts such customs and then adapts them to his pastoral purposes. The opening greeting in Philippians (1:1-2) is one of Paul’s most complicated; it’s not only what he says, but what he doesn’t say that matters.
